Well the first 2 weeks are in the books and things are going about as bonkers as they were last year at this time. After 2 weeks in 2017 the top 2 fantasy QBs were Alex Smith and Trevor Siemian. In keeping that trend alive after 2 weeks in 2018, the top 2 are Ryan Fitzpatrick and Patrick Mahomes. Siemian did not keep up a top QB pace while Alex Smith did and I think this year Fitzpatrick has the same arch as Siemian while Mahomes is this years Alex Smith, which is fitting since he took his place behind center for Andy Reid in Kansas City. Now with that said, Fitzpatrick should have one more round of Fitzmagic left in him for Monday Night Football. Let’s get into it!
It’s almost impossible to move Fitzpatrick and Mahomes out of the 1 and 2 spot and if you have been watching you know what I mean. Both these guys are playing killer football at the moment and I don’t see it slowing down this week. Regression IS coming, but I think it can wait another week or so. Some predictions at the QB position this week for me are Rodgers gets back into something closer to Rodgers form and throws 3 TDs against a tough Washington secondary. Brady gets the ball back to Gronk a lot with his new decoy target this week, Josh Gordon, on the field and Kirk Cousins (one of only 4 QBs to have two QB1 weeks so far) gets to a third QB1 finish in week 3.
I’m fading Rivers but I am still starting him against the Rams unless I have a better option. I believe the Chargers give the Rams their first real contest of the season in the battle for LA on Sunday. Matt Ryan and Drew Brees get into a shoot out, Jimmy G will hold his own against Patrick Mahomes (at least for 3 quarters), and Russell Wilson will continue to have a season to forget when Dallas and their surprisingly solid defense comes to town.
Last but not not least I think Carson Wentz does not miss a beat in his return. The Eagles are coming off a bad loss, playing at home, against a weak defense, with heir MVP QB back, this crowd and team will be fired up and Wentz is gonna go to work. He is a lower end QB1 this week with high upside.
Last season Todd Gurley began his revenge tour on the league and it seems that he just decided to keep it going in 2018. Gurley finished 2017 as the RB1 with 383 PPR Points (42 full points ahead of RB2 Bell) and through two weeks in 2018, Gurley checks in at PPR RB3, behind Alvin Kamara and Melvin Gordon, respectivly, the three are only separated by a total of 5 points.
The surprise is RB4, where we find the name, James Conner, the young second year RB from Pitt University who survived cancer, fought his way back into football, and still got drafted by the Steelers last year. Through 2 games he has played well and proved that the Steelers have a solid run game, even without Bell. I am not saying he is better than Bell, I am only focused on this young man and his talent and where he is after all he has had to over come. That’s the only narrative worth focusing on in my opinion in Pittsburgh. If/When Bell will be back or not is at this point anyone’s guess and I don’t see the point on speculating any more on it. I said it before and I’ll say it again, I do not see how this relationship between Bell and the team is repaired at this point, and I think Bell knows that, and that is why he has not yet reported.
Saquon Barkley has looked every bit of the part of the hype machine he was billed as through the draft process but I am so worried about that offensive line, it is without question one of the worst in the league. Can he keep it up? I think so, for this week at least. I am expecting another healthy dose of short passes to try and get him out in space and I think he breaks one of those short passes the way he did that gorgeous TD run in week 1.
The big surprise this week is going to be Sony Michel. In his first action against the incredibly tough Jacksonville defense last week he lead the team in carries, even though they were playing from behind. James White got a lot of work in the passing game but THIS week in a game the Patriots are most likely leading throughout, Belichick is going to make it a point to run the ball all over his former Defensive Coordinator, Matt Patricia and his Lions. Detroit has given up rushing days of 138 yards to Matt Bredia and 102 yards to Isiah Crowell. Both of those guys broke a run over 60 yards in those games. Sony Michel will say hello to the league in a big way this Sunday Night.
For David Johnson owners, it is a tough situation, it is hard to sit a guy you spent a 1st round pick on but this week against the stout Bears defense does not feel like the week Arizona turns it around. I am hoping to see him used in the passing game more and put in spots he can succeed at least. If that happens, I will at least feel encouraged moving forward. Arizona has just stuck to their scheme so far and ignored their players strengths and talents and that is ALWAYS a recipe for disaster.
UPDATE: 8/21/18 3:16PM EST
With the news today that Dalvin Cook will miss week 3 and is replaced by Latavius Murry, who slides in as RB11, as a low end RB1 this week against BUF. Corey Clement moves up to RB13 with Ajayi and Sproles both ruled out. He is a top tier RB2 with great RB1 potential this weekend against IND.
Michael Thomas is playing like a man possessed at the moment. He is 2nd in the league (behind only Antonio Brown) for total targets at 30, and of those 30…he has caught 28..TWENTY EIGHT of those! His catch rate is currently sitting at 93.3% that is unreal! Oh and he has 269 yards and 3 TDs to go with those, in only 2 games. So yea…he is staying locked at the top of this list until he or someone else gives me a reason to move him out of it. Spoiler alert…that does not happen this week against the Atlanta Falcons. This will be a shoot out and Thomas is playing the role of Doc Holiday. I hope you got and enjoyed that reference.
Speaking of the guy with the most targets in the NFL, Antonio Brown, has been in the news a bit I believe this week right?! Unlike practice on Monday, Brown shows up this coming Monday to work. Look this is a the squeaky wheel gets the grease situation, he is unhappy and while I do not agree with him, there will be an effort to put him in better spots to make big plays on Monday Night Football. I just believe that their are not enough targets to go around and help him finish as the WR1 this week, but he should be closer to the AB we know and love in our lineups this week.
A surprise on this list for some is going to be Kenny Golladay at #11. Look, he has been THE guy for Matt Stafford so far. Golladay has 21% of the team target share and is one of only 4 WRs who has over 300 air yards through 2 games. The other 3 with those air yards are Julio Jones, Antonio Brown, and DeAndre Hopkins…Thats some good company for a fantasy WR you grabbed in the double digit rounds.
**Note Dante Pettis is located at WR18, but if Marqusie Goodwin is good to go swap Pettis here for Goodwin. Petis falls closer to WR32 if Goodwin goes.**
The TE position so far in 2018 is a lot like the QB position, guys at the top that no one saw coming. Current top 3 in PPR formats are; Jared Cook, Jesse James, and Will Dislly…I swear I did not just make that up! Now after those guys it gets back to normal with Travis Kelce, Zach Ertz, and Rob Gronkowski at 4-6. I think it continues to level back out this week but I refuse to count out Cook against a Miami defense that just surrendered 334 yards to rookie Sam Darnold last week and 101 yards to Tennessee’s tight ends in week 1. Now that I think of it Jesse James could be a factor in that MNF shoot out and Dissly could easily continue to be Russell Wilson’s safety blanket against a Dallas defense that did give Evan Engram 7 catches for 67 yards last week (he also ALMOST pulled in a TD pass in that game as well). Basically, what I am saying is, who knows with TE right now.
Some guys I’m high on this week are George Kittle, Jordan Reed, and O.J. Howard. Some guys I am not high on this week are Trey Burton, Mike Gesicki, and Jack Doyle.
Last guy I am down on this week is David Njoku. Look I love his target volume so far in 2018 with 14 targets (only trailing Ertz, Kelce, Cook, and Doyle), but not his production, o those 14 targets he has only 7 catches for 33 yards. 33…thats a 4.7 YPC average, thats good enough for 152th in the league, sandwiched between Jordan Wilkins and Theo Riddick. Not great. Add in this week he is going against a Jets defense that has been stingy as can be against TE’s (66 total yards and 0 TDs to the position through 2 weeks) and you will find him on my bench for this match up. Which of course means his breakout game will be coming this evening just to spite me. Plan accordingly.
If you are playing the DST stream game this season there are some great options this week. Starting tonight with The Cleveland Browns at home against the New York Jets and their rookie QB. The narrative is great for the Browns to get their first win since December 24th 2016! The TNF game is sponsored by Bud Light and Bud Light is ready to unlock these promotional victory refrigerators in Cleveland! It’s all set up so perfectly. Do not ruin this Cleveland!!
Other streaming options this week are Miami, Dallas, Tennessee, and Cincinnati.
