Week 13 Recap / Accountability Blast

Week 13 is in the books and there is a lot of talk around the tough game Monday night between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. As of now Ryan Shaizer seems to be doing better and I am sending love to him and his family. Between his injury, the Juju hit on Burfict, and the Ikona hit on AB in the end zone, it was a tough game to watch at moments. I hope A.J. Green, Le’Veon Bell, and AB did enough to propel oyou into the fantasy playoffs, if not do not despair, for next year will be here before you know it. Lets look at the rest of the happenings from around the league this past Sunday.

QUARTERBACKS

My top 15 QBS for week 13 were; Carson Wentz, Tom Brady, Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson, Philip Rivers, Marcus Mariota,Case Keenum, Jared Goff, Drew Bress, Josh McCown, Cam Newton, Blake Bortles, Brett Hundley, Derek Carr, and Andy Dalton.

Actual top 15 QBs from week 13 were; Alex Smith (37.6), Josh McCown (31.1), Blake Bortles (25.1), Russell Wilson (24.2), Cam Newton (20.4), Andy Dalton (19.3), Joe Flacco (18.7), Jameis Winston (18.6), Marcus Mariota (18.3), Ben Roethlisberger (18.0), Philip Rivers (17.6), Case Keenum (16.9), Carson Wentz (16.9), Tom Savage (16.5), and Derek Carr (15.4), Jarded Goff came in 16th w/ (15.0)

Review: 11.5 of 15. I am gonna take a half point for Goff as he was my QB 8 and just missed the top 15, coming in as QB16 with just less than .4 points than the QB15. The big miss was Alex Smith, who went back to his QB1 ways this week. The Jekyl/Hyde situation in KC this year has been wild to watch. Sad thing is even with the huge day for KC’s offense, they still gave up 38 to the Jets and took an L. With Oakland on tap week 14, I am gonna give Smith the benefit of the doubt as he will find i=himself in my top 10 QBs for this upcoming week.

Brady and Cousins both had tougher weeks, but at least New England was able to move the ball on the ground with Lewis and Burkhead. Washington didn’t play terrible against Dallas, but it wasn’t good either. Cousins had 251 yards and 2 TDs, which you would think would land him in top 15 territory, but he also had 2 INTs to go with that. Where did Dallas’s pass defense come from all of a sudden? Makes the decision on Eli a lot tougher this week.

Speaking of tough Calls, Kirk Cousins goes to LA to face the stout Chargers, Russell Wilson heads to the east coast for a date with the Jacksonville defense, Cam Newton gets the Vikings while Case Keenum gets Carolina while Matt Statford may miss the game against the worst passing defense in the league. It could be a rough week for some of the more reliable fantasy QBs out there. Do you strait your starter or look for a streaming option? I am a start my stater guy (I drafted them for a reason) but if you wanna be bold look into Tom Savage against San Francisco, Blaine Gabbert vs Tennessee, or Josh McCown against Denver (he has played great but this is in Denver and Talib is back this week, so temper expectations).

RUNNING BACKS

My top 15 RBs of week 13 were; Todd Gurley, Alvin Kamara, Leonard Fournette, Samaje Perine, Le’Veon Bell, Melvin Gordon, Jordan Howard, Jamaal Williams, LeSean McCoy, Latavius Murray, Joe Mixon, Marshawn Lynch, Dion Lewis, Christian McCaffrey, and Mark Ingram.

Actual top 15 RBs from week 13 were; Alvin Kamara (29.6), Le’Veon Bell (29.2), Rex Burkhead (25.3), Mark Ingram (24.2), Alex Collins (23.8), Kenyan Drake (23.1), Todd Gurley (21.8), Jamaal Williams (20.3), Marshawn Lynch (20.1), Alfred Morris (20.1), Peyton Barber (18.3), Matt Forte (18.1), Theo Riddick (17.2), Leonard Fournette (16.9), Derrick Henry (16.9), and Jerick McKinnon (16.2). and McCaffrey was just outside at RB16 with 15.9 points.

Review: 7 of 15. Not terrible. I just missed on McCaffrey but if you played him you weren’t too disappointed with his day most likely. Kamara and Ingram continue to dominate with both finishing in the top 4 for fantasy RBs! I thought Lewis would be the back worth starting in NE this week as I expected a lead for NE to nurse with a heavy dose of Lewis. Hats off to Buffalo for playing well which lead to more work for Burkhead, who I had ranked as RB17, he is looking like a late season fantasy winner. If he is still out there, go grab him, with Gronk out this week I think we get a steady dose of Burkhead in the passing game against Miami on Monday night.

What to make of the Green Bay run game? With Rodgers close to possibly returning it looked like it was Jamaal Williams who has been playing better the past few weeks, going over 5.0 YPC for the first time in his career and found the end zone for the second straight week. That great except when the game was on the line, Aaron Jones got his 1st carry of the game and took it to the house. I’m not sure why he didn’t see more action, he sure looked healthy to me. I can’t see how McCarthy can keep him off the field if they want to be winning games. Aaron Jones has played his best football without Aaron Rodgers under center and he is going to be the RB of Green Bay’s future I believe.

Derrick Henry went off for another 70+ yard run for a TD to close out a game. He now has career highs in carries and has 125 with 12 targets to DeMarco Murray’s 140 carries and 39 targets, but Henry is averaging 5.0 YPC to Murray’s 3.7. The lack of passing work is what is holding Henry back. But there is still a lot of hope for what he can be going forward. Can I also quickly mention that even in a 31 point game for KC, Kareem Hunt finished with only 9 carries for 40 yards. He actually ran well but only 9 carries! I am not sure what he did to Andy Reid, but this situation is odd to say the least. How can you start him with the most important game of the season coming up?!

Some waiver wire looks for RB help are Gio Bernard (keep an eye on Mixon, he is in the concussion protocol), Tion Green (with Abdullah out he carried the ball 11 times for 4.6 yards and a TD and looked better in one game than Abdullah has for most of this season) Peyton Barber, and if someone dropped Aaron Jones (always double check). Its pretty bleak on waivers currently, this is a start your starers type of week coming up.
WIDE RECEIVERS

My top 15 WRs for week 13 were; DeAndre Hopkins, Keenan Allen. Brandin Cooks, Michael Thomas, Jamison Crowder, Adam Thielen, Antonio Brown, Alshon Jeffrey, A.J. Green, Mike Evans, Doug Baldwin, Devin Funchess, Davante Adams, Julio Jones, and Robby Anderson.

Actual top 15 WRs of week 13 were; Tyreek Hill (36.5), Nelson Agholor (27.1), A.J. Green (26.7), Keenan Allen (26.5), Larry Fitzgerald (25.8), Jermaine Kearse (24.7), Antonio Brown (24.1), Marquise Lee (21.6), Robby Anderson (19.4), Kenny Stills (18.8), Michael Thomas (18.0), Maquise Goodwin (17.9), Dez Bryant (17.1), Mike Wallace (16.6), and just outside of top 15 was Hopkins with and Funchess both with 16.00.

Review: 6 of 15. I am claiming a half point for Hopkins and Funchess as they tied for WR16 with 16 points each, just 0.6 behind the WR15. Even with that I had a rough week here. I did have Hill as my WR16 and expected a better week from him then we have seen, but I didn’t know he would go off like he did. And on the other side of the ball I expected a good game from Anderson, I didn’t think Kearse would go that wild (although I should have as I had in in my flex spot in multiple DFS leagues this week).

One of my waiver wire darlings, Marquise Goodwin finally finds himself in the top 15 and with the Texans secondary coming up next and the play of Jimmy Garoppolo, I expect to see him back here next week as well! If he is still out there GO GRAB HIM! It’s good to see Dez back in the top 15 and with a match up with the Giants I expect him as a top 15 repeater next week as well.

In other NFC East news, I thought Alshon would have a big week with the contract news but Nelson Agholor went off instead. Philadelphia is moving the ball around and getting so many people involved, great for real football, bad for fantasy football. Ryan Grant continues to look like one of Cousins most trusted targets. Doctson had a very Doctson line of 3/26/1 and Crowder, while wasn’t a top option still gave you 11.7 PPR points so he probably didn’t kill you this week.

DeVante Parker has a total of 1 fantasy point in the last 2 games. 1. I think its becoming more likely he is a first round bust than even a potential role player for his team. Landry and Stills continue to make plays while Parker struggles. Drop him. I hate to say it. It’s just over. The same may be true for Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders as well so long as the QB situation stays like this in Denver. They combined for 4 catches for 38 yards and 0 TDs this week. Even Jeremy Maclin had a slightly better week than those 2 combined. Tough to start those guys in a playoff spot.

Some waiver wire options that may be out there for you are Dede Westbrook (again i know! Jacksonville has some matchups I expect them to need to throw more in and he has 25 targets since his return 3 weeks ago. 25!), Mike Wallace (Pittsburgh has been the worst team against the pass for the past two weeks, Hundley and Dalton both had big days), Danny Amendola (who posted 8/77/0 last time Gronk was out, but that was against Tampa Bay so maybe take it with a grain of salt), and if he is still out there Sterling Shepard (with Eli back under center and Dallas and Philly in next two match ups he could eat).

TIGHT ENDS

My top 10 TEs for week 13 were; Zach Etrz, Travis Kelce, Jared Cook, Rob Gronkowski, Jimmy Graham, Hunter Henry, Delanie Walker, Kyle Rudolph, Vernon Davis, and Ricky Seals-Jones.

Actual top 10 TEs from week 13 were; Travis Kelce (25.4), Rob Gronkowski (23.7), Evan Engram (22.9), Stephen Anderson (18.9), Cameron Brate (17.9), David Njoku (17.4), Delaine Walker (17.3), Hunter Henry (15.1), Kyle Rudolph (13.6), and Jimmy Graham (11.6).

Review: 6 of 10. Let me start with this, I am not a fan of Rob Gronkowski, the play this week was dirty, if you need to see it, here you go. But then for him to appeal his suspension was in extremly poor taste. All the concussions and issues that come from hits like that and the effects they have later after NFL careers are over, plays like this can not go unpunished. It’s inexcusable and I don’t mean to offend any NE fans, but I just think this guy is not a good dude and deserves this suspension.

Now that I’ve said my piece, there was a lot of chalk this week with TEs and Evan Engram was back in the top 10. I discounted him a lot with Geno under center. Zach Ertz was injured so thats a tough break as he has been so good this season. He is dealing with a concussion so keep an eye on his availability, if he misses week 14, Trey Burton is a good streaming option. Jared Cook vanished once again and remains a risky start week after week.

Cameron Brate is a must start if James is under center. Look at the splits this season from James to Fitzpatrick! I am starting him this week at home against Detroit.

David Njoku was another player I am happy to see getting a larger snap and target share. When Cleveland has used him, he has looked unstoppable. TEs typically take time to develop and he looks the part of a top 5 TE in this league, if you can buy him in dynasty over the off season, I strongly advise if you are looking for a solid young TE option.

Some other streaming options for this week if you are missing Gronk are, ASJ against a Denver secondary that has struggled with TEs all season long, Jack Doyle (although I imagine he is owned in most leagues but double check), Ricky Seals-Jones, Gerald Everrett, Jonnu Smith (keep an eye on Walkers ankle, he is day to day currently) and David Njoku could have another good week against a bad GB secondary at home.

There you have it. No DFS review this week as I am spending more focus on the seasonal/dynasty leagues in this important time. Vern’s DFS article will be up on Saturday to help you win that money! My rankings go up on Thursday and look for the podcast to return soon. Thanks for reading everyone!
