Each Week, Adam Cubbage will give his thoughts on the Sunday that was in the NFL and what it means for your Fantasy Football Team going forward.
1. Ben Roethlisberger Might Lead You To The Promised Land
Remember weeks three through seven when no one thought this was possible? Way back when Alex Smith was an MVP candidate and the Chicago Bears were a team on the rise. Start believing people; because barring injury “Big Ben” looks like the guy everyone thought Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston was going to be for them. During the last two weeks he’s thrown for eight touchdowns (against two interceptions) and 650 yards, all while completing 70% (!!!) of his passing attempts and giving new life to every fantasy asset in Pittsburgh. Aside from a week 15 date with the Patriots, his match-ups in weeks 13 (Bengals), 14 (Ravens), and 16 (Texans) line up pretty nicely for a fantasy playoff run. (See Also: Rivers, Phillip)
2. Now Is Not The Time To Get Lazy And Stop Tinkering Strategically
Take what I’m about to say and remember it going forward: Do. Not. Get. Lazy. I don’t care if you have a “Bye” week 14 or if your team has been number one all year. I DO NOT CARE. I’ve won A LOT in fantasy football. I’ve won when I’m supposed to but I’ve lost a lot more when I shouldn’t have. You know what I call an 11-2 team that lost in round one or two of the playoffs? A loser.
So what does this have to do with thoughts after this week? Julio Jones just went off for 253 yards and two touchdowns last Sunday. You better believe some sucker is locking him in without thinking about it this week despite the fact he’s matching up against Xavier Rhodes and the Vikings. Joe Mixon (who I am extremely high on) just flashed RB1 potential against the Browns, but he’s not a set-and-forget RB1 yet against the Steelers. The Jaguars defense got confused in the desert by Blaine Gabbert and the Cardinals. Someone is second guessing them this week against a Colts team they shutout 27-0 earlier this season.
My point: “Humility Is Only A Week Away.” You want to win? Keep tinkering.
3. Players You Can Stop Depending On Moving Forward
I want to take this opportunity to “thank” a few players for their efforts this season. Players we had all the belief in the world in but now we can, confidently, forget about depending on going forward (Cue Sarah McLachlan Music https://youtu.be/i1GmxMTwUgs): Orleans Darkwa, Emmanuel Sanders, Eric Decker, Dez Bryant, Doug Martin, Josh Doctson, Jarvis Landry, Tyrell Williams, Amari Cooper, DeVante Parker.
Thanks for the “memories”, fellas.
